- Origin: endemic to Burnett and Mary River systems
- Lifespan: at least 20–25 years (the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, has a Australian lungfish which is at least 80 years old.)
- Adult size: 100 cm and above
- Native climatic conditions: tropical, subtropical
- Care Level: very easy
- Availability: protected species; very difficult to get young specimens
- Minimum Tank Size: 100 gallons
- Tank Level: mid, bottom dweller
- Water temperature: 75-86° F (25-30° C)
- Water pH: around 7.0
- Temperament: shy, peaceful
- Diet: carnivore; accepts frogs, earthworms, pieces of meat, and pelleted food
- Breeding: first breeding after 17 years
These lungfish is very easy to keep in aquarium, provided the hobbyist moves to bigger tanks from time to time as the fish has a long life and grows big. The Australian lungfish is protected by wildlife acts and is considered as Vulnerable species. Wild collections are banned and special permission is required for collecting specimen from wild. All commercially produced lungfish are micro-chipped and CITES registered. It is very difficult to get aquarium specimen and is very expensive.
